CTSS Keynote Presentation –
The Relationship between Challenging Behaviors and Childhood Trauma: New Hope and Perspectives from Brain Science

This keynote will introduce new concepts from brain science that help us understand why
children who have been exposed to trauma or toxic stress experience high rates of
behavioral challenges.

We now know that these behaviors emanate or stem from instinctive survival mechanisms. We find answers by respecting the adaptive nature of various behaviors as we help children experience deep relational safety through our relationships with them.

This keynote will introduce a groundbreaking approach to solving children’s
behavioral challenges by focusing on building a child’s (or teenager’s) foundation for
emotional and behavioral control. It will move beyond paradigms that focus on compliance
and surface behaviors. Based on evidence from neuroscience, we can help traumatized
children find hope through compassionate relationships.
