There is NO medication specifically for RAD, attachment difficulties or trauma. However, ATN does not discourage the use of medications. Many families have found that medications help to treat symptoms and lessen anxiety, intrusive thoughts and behaviors in such a way that the child is better able to benefit from therapies and other interventions.
Parents should seek out the care of a child psychiatrist (preferably with experience treating traumatized children/those with attachment disorder). General practitioners/pediatricians do not usually have the level of expertise needed to determine the best course of medication for our complex children.
Many medications come with side effects that are sometimes serious or impact the child’s development. Parents should discuss these with their child’s psychiatrist and should make sure that all the child’s medical professionals are aware of the medications the child is taking before treating for any condition.
