Trauma-Sensitive Schools recognize that we must take care of the adults nervous systems to be able to maintain the connection and co-regulation that is at the core of this relational work. It’s much like the well-known instruction to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others.
As Educators we’ve come into our profession to help children learn and thrive. We do a much better job of this when we’re not burned out, overwhelmed and when we are supported in our efforts. School-wide wellness strategies that are led by school leadership are a must in schools on the journey to becoming trauma-responsive.
